Do I need to hold my own keys for it to count as ownership?

Answered by the ShariaQuant team

Possession in fiqh means actual control, which makes a private key the strongest form of ownership available to you. Exchange balances are a claim on a company rather than the asset itself, which is weaker but still recognised. Self custody creates its own problem, because a key nobody else knows is an inheritance your family cannot reach.

Self custody and possession in Islamic law

This is Shariah screening and education, not financial advice. Rulings on newer products differ between scholars, so where a question is disputed we say so rather than pick a side for you. If your situation is unusual, ask your own scholar.
