What is the difference between maysir and qimar?
Maysir is the word the Qur'an uses (Al-Ma'idah 5:90), named after a pre-Islamic game in which men drew arrows for shares of a slaughtered camel. Qimar is the term the jurists use for a contract in which each side stakes something and the winner takes the loser's stake. Many scholars use the two words interchangeably, and those who separate them treat qimar as the clearest form of maysir, so the ruling is the same either way.
