Zakat and purification

Do I owe zakat on gains I have not cashed out?

Answered by the ShariaQuant team

Yes. Zakat is assessed on what you own on your zakat date, not on what you have sold, so a position that quadrupled is valued at today's price even if you have not touched it. Once you understand why, most other zakat questions answer themselves.

Do you owe zakat on an unrealised gain?

This is Shariah screening and education, not financial advice. Rulings on newer products differ between scholars, so where a question is disputed we say so rather than pick a side for you. If your situation is unusual, ask your own scholar.
