Are options halal?

Answered by the ShariaQuant team

No. An option sells you a right rather than an asset, and fiqh does not recognise a bare right as something that can be bought and sold. Add the deferred settlement and the zero sum payoff and it fails on several counts at once.

The four things that break it

This is Shariah screening and education, not financial advice. Rulings on newer products differ between scholars, so where a question is disputed we say so rather than pick a side for you. If your situation is unusual, ask your own scholar.
