"Had not taken a view on cryptocurrency, its Secretary-General said in October 2021."
In October 2021 AAOIFI's Secretary-General Omar Mustafa Ansari said: "as of now, we believe that it is not in our immediate agenda and we have not taken a view on that. From a Shariah perspective, people have to be careful about investing or using these currencies." In the same interview he said AAOIFI had not taken a view on NFTs either.
Two of AAOIFI's existing standards are what the fatwa library applies to tokenized assets. Shari'ah Standard 57 requires spot exchange and actual or constructive possession of fully allocated gold, for example through a certificate that identifies the specific bars. Shari'ah Standard 21 on shares is the basis on which a company behind a tokenized share is screened.
