"Deferred a ruling on digital currencies in Resolution No. 237 (2019), pending further research."

IIFA Resolution No. 237 (8/24), adopted in Dubai on 4 to 6 November 2019, set out the types of digital currency (coins such as Bitcoin, alternative coins, and tokens), noted the significant risks, and deferred a ruling pending further research. A symposium in Jeddah on 8 November 2021 heard 15 research papers, and the Academy withheld its recommendations until they were revised. The Academy's earlier Resolution No. 63 (1992) on financial markets is the one the fatwa library cites for derivatives: it rules options contracts impermissible, rules commodity contracts that do not end in actual delivery "essentially not permissible," and forbids buying shares with an interest-bearing broker loan.
