Mufti Taqi Usmani

Mufti Taqi Usmani is a former judge of the Shariat Appellate Bench of Pakistan's Supreme Court and a former vice-president of the International Islamic Fiqh Academy. In May 2021 his Darul Iftaa published his view that cryptocurrency is not permissible to trade in because of how speculative it is. A fatwa of Darul Ifta, Jamia Darul Uloom Karachi, dated 24 Dhul Hijjah 1447 (10 June 2026) and signed by him and five other scholars, holds that "cryptocurrency is not considered 'maal' (wealth) in Sharia. Instead, it is merely the recording of fictitious numbers in an account, whether in the form of USDT or other crypto tokens." A purchase made with it is therefore invalid. In July 2026 the chairman of Pakistan's Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority met him for what both sides called a constructive discussion, and in September 2026 PVARA announced a Shariah Advisory Board, with his involvement, to guide digital-asset transactions.
